Our typical scope of work includes site clearing, mass earthwork, site development, building and basement excavation, and site utilities, including water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer.
The majority of our projects are commercial, with some residential work as well.
The Position
We're looking for an experienced Utility Crew Pipelayer to join our team.
This position is for someone who understands that installing underground utilities requires accuracy, attention to detail, teamwork, and taking pride in doing the job correctly the first time.
You'll work closely with equipment operators and other members of the utility crew to install water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems according to plans and specifications.
This is a hands-on position. You'll spend time working in and around utility trenches, operating equipment when needed, performing manual labor, and helping keep the crew productive and organized.
Premium Pay for Pipelaying
When you are performing pipelaying duties, you will be paid a premium hourly rate.
When operating equipment or performing other duties, you will be paid your normal hourly rate.
Starting pay is based on experience.
We're looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, communicates well with the crew, and understands that quality utility installation is about getting the details right.
What You'll Do
Other duties may be required and assigned.

Install water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer pipe according to plans and specifications.

Ensure excavations are properly dug to the required grade and depth.

Ensure the correct bedding material is installed and maintained.

Ensure pipe joints are clean and properly sealed at every connection.

Use a grade laser to establish and maintain proper grades.
-
Read, understand, and work from utility and grading plans.

Measure and cut pipe as needed using a gas-powered saw.

Operate handheld gas-powered compactors within utility trenches.

Communicate with equipment operators and other crew members throughout the installation process.

Help coordinate the work taking place in and around the trench.

Operate equipment as needed, including skid steers and off-road dump trucks.

Make sure the necessary tools and equipment are brought to the job site and properly staged each day.

Keep tools, equipment, and work areas clean and organized.

Perform basic equipment maintenance, including greasing equipment and checking fluid levels.

Identify potential problems with the installation and communicate them before they become larger issues.

Perform manual labor as required, including occasionally lifting in excess of 75 pounds.

Assist the grading crew and other company crews as needed.

Maintain a safe, clean, and organized working environment.

Follow all company and job-site safety requirements.

You don't have to know everything, but you need to be willing to ask questions, learn from experienced people, and take ownership of your work.

Experienced using a grade laser.

Familiar with construction math, grades, and elevations.

Comfortable operating equipment such as skid steers and off-road dump trucks.

Able to communicate effectively with operators and other crew members.

Self-motivated and able to stay productive without constant supervision.

Dependable and willing to do what needs to be done to keep the crew moving.

Comfortable performing physically demanding work and manual labor.

Safety-minded and committed to doing the job correctly.

Flexible and willing to assist other crews when needed.

Someone who takes care of tools and equipment and keeps the work area organized.

Someone who wants to continue developing their skills in underground utility construction.
2+ years of utility installation experience is preferred.
A pipe layer card/certification is preferred.
A valid driver's license is required.
What We Expect From Our Pipelayers
Utility installation is one of the areas where doing something “close enough” isn't good enough.
Once a pipe is buried, correcting a mistake can be expensive and time-consuming.
That's why we expect our pipelayers to pay attention to grades, elevations, bedding, connections, and the overall quality of the installation.
We want our people to take ownership.

At the same time, we have experienced people on our crews who are willing to share their knowledge.

Where We Work
Our shop is located in Baraboo, Wisconsin, and the majority of our projects are located within approximately an hour of our shop.
Our typical service area stretches from the Wisconsin Dells and Mauston area toward Madison and into the Dousman and Waukesha areas.
The majority of our work is concentrated in Dane County and the surrounding areas.
Our crews should be comfortable traveling throughout our service area and working at different project locations as needed.
Compensation & Benefits
Starting pay is based on experience.
This is a full-time position with premium hourly pay while performing pipelaying duties and opportunities for increased pay based on performance.
